Suite à cette intéressante petite discussion, j'ai passé un mot à M. Smith en lui demandant ce qu'il savait des usages de Weston, puisqu'il est un de ses meilleurs connaisseurs. Il avait à plusieurs reprises écrit que EW utilisait de très petites ouvertures, et voici ce qu'il répond :
"Weston used apertures up to f64. There was only once, I believe, that
he made an aperture smaller--when he photographed the maguey plant in
Mexico where one of the leaves is coming forward toward the lens. The
system that may have been in effect on some of his lenses may not
have been f stops, but may have been "U.S. stops". In this system
U.S. 16 and f 16 match. Then U.S. goes to 32, then 64, then 128, then
256, instead of f 22, 32, 45, 64. The openings are the same, however."
