Voici le résultat d'essais comparatifs fait par un particulier comme vous et moi, cela n'a donc que la valeur que l'on veut bien lui accorder, mais je trouve cela toujours intéressant :
I have now printed scans from the Imacon 646 and the Epson 4870 at
large sizes -- 20x24, 1440 dpi on an Epson 7600, Enhanced Matte paper.
I even went back to the Imacon and made two more scans, just to have
a better basis for comparison. My conclusion: it's a dead heat.
The background: I scanned 4-4x5 negatives on the Imacon and compared
them to 4870 scans. All the negatives were made with good lenses --
two were with a Fuji 125, one with a Nikon 300, one with a Schneider
210. Two negatives were exteriors, two were interiors. One negative
was a little denser than optimal, one was a little thin, and two were
about right.
The Imacon is sharper. On a print, it's not a glaring difference.
You have to look rather carefully to see it. The difference is much
more apparent at 1:1 on the monitor. The difference would be more
apparent on bigger prints.
The Epson has better dynamic range (!). The Imacon can see somewhat
further into the dense areas of a negative (which print as
highlights). The Epson, however, can see much further into the thin
areas (which print as shadows). On prints from negatives, the Epson
scans had all sorts of shadow detail that was missing from the Imacon
scans. Bear in mind that I set every control in the Imacon software
"wide open" to avoid all clipping. I got the Imacon technician to
look over the settings and confirm that I was capturing as much
information as possible.
The Imacon does not have Ice dust removal. It does have software dust
removal that I did not get to mess around with. I am suspicious of
software dust removal, although Imacon says its program is better than
others' and does not soften the image.
Imacon can only scan a 4x5 at 2040 dpi max, whereas I made the 4870
scans at 2400 dpi. I imagine that with smaller negatives, which the
Imacon scans at much higher dpi's, the Imacon would look a lot better
compared to the 4870.
